- Effective promotion of swimming to maximise the sport's profile
Why Swim?
New Zealand is an island nation and it is essential that every New Zealander has the skills necessary to survive in the water - swimming is a fundamental life skill
Swimming is exciting, it's refreshing, it's a year round activity, it's great for fitness, it's great for after sport recovery (just ask the All Blacks and the Warriors), it's a Kiwi tradition!
Swimming is also a great competitive sport and one of the most watched sports at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games!
Being able to swim offers you the opportunity to do so much more e.g. surfing, sailing, wake boarding, water skiing, diving, and many more wonderful water-related activities
If you can swim, you'll no longer be afraid of the water, you'll embrace it!
Swimming is New Zealand's third most popular recreational activity with 34.8 percent e.g. 1,139,812 New Zealanders choosing swimming as their preferred activity (SPARC 2007/8 Active New Zealand Survey). Only walking and gardening are more popular! New Zealanders swim for a variety of reasons including sport, recreation and the many health benefits.
