Freyberg Beach and Oriental Bay Beach
We are excited to present the new 'I'm Going Long' swim course starting from the iconic 'Boat Shed' in Frank Kitts Lagoon and finishing in Oriental Bay. The course will still take swimmers out to the Lighthouse and back past the fountain on their way back to Freyberg Beach. Spectators can also enjoy the new swim course by walking from Frank Kitts Lagoon around Wellington waterfront past Te Papa and back to the swim finish at Freyberg Beach. The spectator walk is 1.2km.
The State Capital Classic also includes the 'Step It Up' 1000m which takes swimmers around the fountain, the 'Give It A Go' 300m which is a great opportunity for new comers to ocean swimming to take the plunge and enjoy a course which is close to the shore line with plenty of Surf Life Saving crew to surround you and help you to feel safe and confident.

Registration details for the forthcoming season will be confirmed at a later date.
We do now offer a pre-paid courier service that will courier your pack including your cap and timing chip to you the week leading up to the event. You can book and pay for this service when entering online or purchase from the ocean swim store.
All entrants will receive:
- A timing chip which is loaned to you for the event
- A swim cap that you must wear or the duration of the event
- A gift from principal sponsor State insurance (item TBC - it is being chosen at the moment)
- A personalised certificate that you can download and print at no charge from the results page
- Other sponsor goodies
- Free Bag Transport Service

Official Charity – Surf Life Saving NZ
Surf Life Saving NZ provide an essential service on New Zealand’s beaches and at the State NZ Ocean Swim Series. They keep all of us safe on the beach and in the water which is why they are the official charity of the State NZ Ocean Swim Series.
Please give generously to Surf Life Saving NZ. All donations will receive a free gift. You can donate when you enter or through the Ocean Swim Store. You can also donate on event day.
- Donations of $5 and $10 will receive a Surf Life Saving NZ 100 Year Centenary key ring
- Donations of $20 will receive a Surf Life Saving NZ toy IRB boat
- Donations of $40 will receive a Surf Life Saving NZ Teddy Bear
- Donations of $90 will receive a Surf Life Saving NZ Centenary book

The cut off times for the State Capital Classic are:
- 'I'm Going Long' 3.3km - 2 hours from your wave/group start
- 'Step It Up' 1000m - 40 minutes from your group start
- 'Give It Go' 300m - 13 minutes

'I'm Going Long' 3.3km course map
The new 3.3km swim course starts from Frankitts Lagoon.
Swimmers will start in 4 speed seeded start groups based on the estimated finish time stated in your entry.
The 3.3km swim is a deep water start. Each swim group will be asked to make their way to two marker buoys on the Harbour side of the bridge in Frankitts Lagoon.
All swimmers much reach the first 900m buoy within 33 minutes of their start time to be able to complete the swim course.
Swimmers then head follow the buoys directly to and around the lighthouse, they then swim around the fountain directly into finish at Freyberg Beach
State OceanKids 200m course map
Following the safety briefing on Freyberg Beach, The State OceanKids 200m swim will start from Oriental Bay beach. The children will start in 2 start groups. The children will swim out to a small buoy close to the shoreline and around to the finish area at Freyberg Beach. Please note that this course is close to the shore but will be over the children's heads.
'Step It Up' 1000m & 'Give It A Go' 300m course maps
The 'Give It A Go' 300m and the 'Step It Up' 1000m swims will start from Oriental Bay beach 10 minutes apart or once the last 'Give It A Go'300m swimmer has rounded the raft. Each swim distance will split into 2 or 3 start groups.
The 'Give It A Go' 300m swim will start from Oriental Bay Beach, round the raft finishing at Freyberg Beach.
The 'Step It Up' 1000m swim will start from Oriental Bay beach, past the fountain, around a marker buoy and straight into the finish at Freyberg Beach.
'I'm Going Long' Contingency Course - OPTION 1
OPTION 1
In the event of weather that prevents the ‘I’m Going Long’ original swim from being able to complete the swim course safely the swim will move to a smaller course within the existing 3.3km swim. Course Option 1 will be reduced to a 1750m swim. The event will start at planned time of 9.00AM with a safety briefing at 8.40AM
'I'm Going Long' Contingency Course - OPTION 2
OPTION 2
In the event of weather that prevents the ‘I’m Going Long’ 3.3km swim from being able to complete the swim course safely the swim will move to a smaller course off Freyberg Beach. The event will start at 9:45AM with a safety briefing at 9.30AM.
